GENERAL REQUIREMENTS OF A STEEL FABRICATION YARD

Steel fabrication is the process of building steel structures by assembling, cutting, and bending.

The construction industry has evolved significantly and with it, many new and improved methods including steel fabrication.

If you think about skyscrapers, warehouses, and shopping malls, almost every aspect in construction consists of structural steel.

Steel framed structures are common across many construction projects including garages, residential properties and short-term temporary structures.

Steel fabrication is used to create various components and products with different qualities for different applications. The fact is structural steelwork has been the primary choice for most builders, engineers, contractors, and structural steel fabricators.

Many industries rely on steel fabrication because of the quality, reliability, flexibility, cost effectiveness and sustainability that it offers.

Some people do not consider steel fabrication as engineering, they regard it to be a form of art. Selecting the right kind of metals for any kind of job and the methodology to be used is a skill acquired through experience.

The results obtained for the right methods are spectacular especially in the construction industry.

Architects and builders like to give a particular brand to their designs. Components built out of metal gives them the perfect opportunity for branding.

Steel is often considered to be favourite because of its good strength. Different types of steel are used for steel fabrication. These include aluminium-strengthened steel, brass-reinforced steel, stainless steel and many more. The final choice of the metal to be used is determined by where the end products will be used.

Steel fabricators use multiple manipulation techniques. Some of them are:

- Shot blasting – This is the process of using small beads of steel to blast large sections of steel. Shot blasting is primarily used to remove impurities from the surface, so that the welding can take place smoothly.

- Cutting – This is the process of cutting large sections of steel before it is fabricated. This is done in order to ensure that the entire process runs smoothly.

- Bending – For steel fabrication intricate shapes of steel and elements are required. Fabricators can achieve this objective by using different techniques and tools.

- Coating – Usually steel requires a coating for both aesthetic and practical. Galvanization is used in this process, which is usually the coating of steel with zinc. If colours are required, a coat of painting is provided.

Some of the most sophisticated methods of steel fabrication involve using large complex welded components of products that are rolled into one product.

Since high temperature is used to manufacture steel product, form components, and join them together, a small amount of dimensional variation can be seen.

This is due to a high level of distortion that is unavoidable. This variation is considered to be significant in many ways. It usually involves work on steel that is made remotely from the site and also precise components for mechanical operations.

These components interact with each other and still their precision varies considerably during its functioning. Once the variation is understood thoroughly by the fabricator, he can use the right kind of tolerances to ensure that everything goes on smoothly.

STEEL FABRICATION AND STRUCTURAL STEELWORK

Construction and architectural engineering sectors are two of the toughest industries in the world today. Designs are often complex and demanding with the final product requiring the highest integrity to withstand all types of conditions. Due to the very nature of these industries, the materials used must be strong and exceptionally durable.

Modern technology, machinery, and computer aided design software (CAD) have put steel fabrication at the next level. It now involves implementing various manufacturing processes which include bending, cutting, grinding, brazing, and welding.

QUALITY STEEL FABRICATION REQUIRES INDUSTRY EXPERTS

Steel fabrication is a specialist process that involves cutting, shaping, or moulding metals into the final product. Customers are better off using an engineering company with expertly trained staff, cutting-edge machinery and loads of industry experience.

For the most part, good steel fabrication shops can produce a wide range of products in various shapes and sizes.

Manufacturers often require a non-standard component or a unique metal product which means they need custom fabrication services. This provides them with exceptional design and production assistance for built-to-order parts.

The structural steel fabricator shall have adequate personnel, organisation, experience, procedures, knowledge, equipment, and plant capable of producing quality workmanship. In addition, prior to fabrication, all steel fabricators must meet certification requirements of the specific trade from the relevant certification body recognised in that country.
